Short-Term vs. Long-Term Capital Gains
Short-Term (held ≤ 1 year)
Taxed at your ordinary income tax rate, which can be as high as 37%. This is the same rate you pay on your salary or wages.
Long-Term (held > 1 year)
Taxed at preferential rates of 0%, 15%, or 20% depending on your taxable income. Most taxpayers pay 15%.

| 0% | Up to $48,350 | Up to $96,700 |
| 15% | $48,351 – $533,400 | $96,701 – $600,050 |

Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT)
The Net Investment Income Tax is an additional 3.8% surtax on investment income (including capital gains) for higher earners. It applies when your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds $200,000 for single filers or $250,000 for married filing jointly.
The NIIT is calculated on the lesser of your net investment income or the amount by which your MAGI exceeds the threshold. This is in addition to any capital gains tax you owe.
